For handle shape, first look at finger contact points and installation space

The zipper pull cord extends the pull tab of the zipper slider, making it easier for fingers to reach and apply force, and also serves as a pull accessory and visual decoration for garment and bag zippers. When choosing a handle shape, you can first consider these questions: where the fingers make contact, how large the cord loop or ring opening should be, and how the installation path fits with the pull tab hole, then compare specific styles.

Operating with gloves on is a commonly mentioned scenario: pulling a shorter pull tab up and down is more difficult when wearing gloves, so the industry offers larger or longer pull tabs as a solution. Handle shapes can also be considered along these lines, so that fingers still have a contact point while wearing gloves.

Features of four common shapes

Short round head: The grip is relatively short and narrowed in the middle, with dense fine ridges on the surface forming a textured area for finger contact; the size can be adjusted to suit the garment's space, and it is commonly used on pocket zippers of coats and sportswear, lightweight backpacks, waist bags, and similar applications.

Long slim waist: The end of the grip is rounded and the middle is slightly waisted, providing a longer finger contact area; the grip length can be adjusted to suit the placket or pocket position, making it suitable for the zipper pull areas of sports jackets and outdoor apparel.

Wide rounded face: The grip has an elongated rounded profile with a lettering area on the front, allowing the pull function to be matched with the product's exterior design; thickness, corner radii, and the edges of the lettering area can be confirmed against the artwork, making it suitable for styles that require a wide grip and a logo area.

Curved double-end: The cord connects the two sides of the grip at each end, forming a larger loop opening, and the grip has a curved profile. Whether it is easy to grasp and whether the loop opening and installation path are suitable must be evaluated against the actual zipper structure before finalizing the curved profile and cord loop length.

Material and appearance description

For the grip, thermoplastic elastomers such as TPU / TPE can be evaluated, with material selection based on hardness, hand feel, and molding requirements; for the braided cord, polyester or nylon can be evaluated. The specific material grades, cord specifications, and cord-to-grip connection方案 need to be confirmed in conjunction with the project and samples. The real photos included in this article are intended to illustrate shape examples and do not mean that the specific models shown in the images have been confirmed to use a particular material.

Comparison of four grip shapes

  1.

    Short round head

Relatively short, narrowed in the middle, with fine ribs; dimensions can be adjusted to the garment space, commonly used for pocket and waist pack areas.

  2.

Long bar with a cinched waist

Rounded ends with a slightly waisted middle, a longer finger contact area, and the length can be adjusted to match the placket or pocket position.

  3.

    Wide face with rounded corners

Elongated rounded-corner profile with an optional lettering area on the front; thickness and corner radius to be confirmed against the artwork.

  4.

    Curved dual ends

Both ends of the cord connect to the two sides of the handle to form a larger loop opening; the suitable zipper attachment method for the target must be confirmed first.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When wearing gloves, in which direction can the grip be adjusted?

Options to evaluate include extending the finger contact area or enlarging the loop opening; the final feel is subject to confirmation with samples. When wearing gloves, pulling a short pull tab up and down is relatively difficult, and the industry's approach is to provide a larger or longer pull tab; for grips, an elongated grip provides a longer finger contact area, while the curved double-ended shape forms a larger loop opening, and both can be candidates for the lengthening or enlarging direction. It is recommended to first take one sample of each and actually try pulling to confirm whether it is comfortable to use while wearing gloves, and then decide on the solution.

When the space around the zipper is small, which dimensions of the grip need to be controlled?

Mainly control the grip length, thickness, and loop (cord loop) size. When the space around the opening of pockets, waist packs, and similar items is limited, the dimensions of the short round-head grip can be adjusted to fit the garment space; the curved double-ended shape has a larger loop opening, so it is first necessary to confirm that its installation method suits the target zipper, and then determine the curved profile and cord loop length. The cord length and grip size must match the opening position; do not look only at the grip shape.

What information should be prepared before requesting a quotation?

At minimum, provide the pull-tab hole size and shape, cord loop length, cord diameter, grip length, width and thickness, hardness, color or logo requirements, as well as the installation path and application location. The cord loop attachment method must be confirmed together with the zipper pull-tab hole size; for the wide-face version, also specify the lettering content and position and the logo depth; for the curved double-ended version, specify the loop opening size and the connection points on both sides. Installation fit, connection security and finished-product appearance are subject to the confirmed sample; it is not advisable to place an order based on appearance drawings alone.
