First clarify the concepts: TPE is a broad category, and TPU is only one class within it

Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is a class of materials that combines rubber-like elasticity with the processability of plastics; common processing methods include injection molding and extrusion. Under ISO 18064, TPE is divided into subclasses such as TPU, TPS, TPV, TPC, and TPA. When customers say "TPE", it may refer to completely different materials at different suppliers, so when requesting a quote it is best to confirm the subclass, for example whether it is TPU or TPS.

TPU is thermoplastic polyurethane, characterized mainly by high mechanical strength and good wear resistance; TPS is a thermoplastic styrenic block copolymer with a very wide hardness range and good resistance to polar media such as water. Both belong to TPE, but their performance orientations differ, so they cannot be compared on price by the single name "TPE".

Hardness and feel: judge by the specific hardness grade, not by the category name

Both TPU and TPS are available in grades of different hardness. When requesting a quote, it is advisable to tell the supplier the target hardness or feel, and to confirm the hardness scale used and the specific grade; hardness cannot be ranked by material category alone.

TPS is commonly used for grip parts such as handles; the specific feel is subject to confirmation with samples. For luggage and garment accessories, it is advisable to also specify the requirements for grip, friction, and the service environment, and then let the supplier propose a specific material solution.

Abrasion resistance vs. water resistance: the two material families have different strengths

TPU's strengths are mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, making it suitable for parts subject to repeated friction and tensile stress. However, TPU is susceptible to hydrolytic degradation when exposed to water and aqueous solutions, especially at elevated temperatures, which limits its use in long-term humid environments. TPS offers better resistance to polar media such as water and acids, but in non-polar media and abrasion resistance, standard TPS is generally inferior to TPU.

For parts such as outdoor backpacks and the zipper areas of hardshell jackets, which may be exposed to rain, sweat or frequent friction, material selection needs to weigh abrasion resistance and water resistance together rather than looking at a single indicator alone. Whether a specific grade is suitable should still be confirmed through supplier recommendations and sample validation.

Application pairing: durable parts and grip parts each have their usual destinations

Typical applications for TPU include hoses, sports shoes and industrial soles, and phone cases. Because of its good flowability and good adhesion, TPS is often used in multi-component molding, as well as for parts such as handles and seals. The applications described here are common industry applications and do not mean that DAWEI has all the manufacturing capabilities for these applications.

On the trim side, zipper pulls are a common example: the grip can be evaluated in thermoplastic elastomers such as TPU/TPE, with the material selected based on hardness, hand feel and molding requirements, while the tail connects to a braided cord loop that extends the pull area and makes it easier to grab. This type of structure can be used for the main compartment, front pocket and side pocket zippers of bags, as well as for coat placket and pocket zippers. The image shows the product structure and does not mean that this model has been confirmed to use a specific material.

Selection boundaries

A material name only indicates a general category and cannot be used to directly infer the strength, service life or hand feel of a given trim part. Formulations and modification approaches may differ between suppliers, and the same subcategory may also show performance differences. This article compares common characteristics at the category level; for specific material selection, please rely on supplier recommendations and samples confirmed by both parties.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can requirements be clearly stated during inquiry to reduce back-and-forth rework?

First state the use environment, then performance, and finally appearance and fit. The use environment includes whether the part will be exposed to rain, whether it will be in long-term contact with sweat or oil, whether it is for indoor or outdoor use, and the approximate temperature range; performance includes hardness, rebound, surface hand feel, and whether wear resistance is required; appearance and fit include color, surface texture, cord loop length, and the way it fits the zipper pull tab hole. Only by stating all of these clearly at once can the supplier recommend a specific category instead of giving a vague "TPE quotation".

It is hard to distinguish TPE, silicone, or rubber by appearance and feel alone. We recommend asking the supplier to specify the material subcategory in writing, for example TPU or TPS, and to confirm hardness and feel against a sample. Different subcategories vary considerably in suitable applications, and quotes may differ, so pricing must be requested for the specific grade rather than compared by material name alone.

Which accessory parts are better suited to TPU and TPS respectively?

Based on the typical strengths of each material, soft plastic parts requiring abrasion resistance and tear resistance lean toward TPU; for parts requiring a soft grip and overmolding onto rigid plastic, TPS is a common candidate. This judgment is based on the common application orientations of the two material types, not a mandatory standard, and the final decision still depends on the specific grade and sample performance.

Taking zipper pulls as an example, the grip, opening size, joint area, dimensions, thickness, color, and surface effect can all be customized per project, the material can be evaluated between TPU / TPE, and the installation fit and finished effect are subject to the confirmed sample. If the project involves long-term moisture or high-frequency friction, these two points should be communicated to the supplier in advance so that it can find a suitable solution within the corresponding category.
